Why Do We Celebrate God’s 7th Day Sabbath?
God’s Own Answers (Genesis 2:1-3)
-
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their hosts.
-
On the seventh day, God ended His work which He had made, and rested from all His work.
-
God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His creation.
Was God tired when He rested?
No. The word “rest” here means God stopped creating because His work was complete. This rest serves as an example for us—a day to cease our own work, refresh ourselves after six days of labor, and connect with God in true fellowship from Friday evening to Saturday evening.
There are seven days in a week, and God commanded us to dedicate one to Him. This day acts as a sign separating us from the world—a mark of honor for believers in Jesus Christ. While Satan blinded many to neglect this commandment, God’s will remains for us to rest on the seventh day.
The Sabbath as a Sign of God’s People
God originally made the Sabbath for the whole world, but through rejection, it became renewed with Israel—the first chosen nation set apart by God. The Sabbath stands as a line of demarcation between God’s people and the rest of the world.
Jesus said in Mark 2:27-28:
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
The Sabbath belongs to God and was given for our benefit and rest.
Exodus 16:23-25 confirms:
“Tomorrow is a Sabbath to the Lord… bake and cook today, and save the rest for tomorrow, so it will not spoil.”
The Sabbath and Separation from the World
God uses the Sabbath to separate His people from the world ruled by Satan, just as He did with Israel in Egypt (Exodus 8:22-23). Jesus also prayed for His followers, acknowledging they are not of this world (John 17:6, 14, 16).
Sabbath Observance in the New Testament
Jesus urged His disciples to pray their escape would not be on the Sabbath (Matthew 24:20), indicating Sabbath observance would continue after His resurrection and ascension.
Commandments and Sabbath Laws
The Ten Commandments clearly command keeping the Sabbath holy (Exodus 20:1-18), emphasizing rest for everyone—children, servants, even animals. Honoring the Sabbath brings blessings and shows obedience to God.
Worship, Fellowship, and Prayer
We celebrate the Sabbath not only as rest but as a time to worship, renew our faith, and unite with fellow believers. It’s a day to honor God’s commandments and remember His salvation through Jesus Christ.
Prayers and Blessings
Let us pray that the Lord of the Sabbath inspires all believers worldwide to honor the 7th day Sabbath and God’s feasts, acknowledging the salvation Christ gave us.
Numbers 6:24-26 blesses us:
“The LORD bless you and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you;
The LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace.”
Final Words
Thank God for His Spirit working in us to share His truth boldly. May we live and preach His Word, heal the sick, cast out darkness, and win souls for Christ, loving God and others as Jesus taught.
I, Juliana JooSabba, declare that we are blessed in every way—spiritually, physically, morally, and financially—in Jesus’ name.
Scripture Inspiration
From Luke 1:46-55 (Mary’s Song) and Psalm 23:
The Lord is our shepherd; we shall not want. Even in dark valleys, we fear no evil for God is with us.
The Lord’s Prayer
“Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.”
Conclusion
We celebrate God and Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath, to His glory forever. Amen.
