Jesus Christ: Light of the World
Jesus Christ says: “I am the light of the world.” In 1 John 1:5, we read: God is light, and there is no darkness at all in Him.
Are Jesus Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit three different persons claiming the same thing? No.
Note: Many in Christendom have misunderstood this, promoting the idea of the Trinity. This comes from a misinterpretation of 1 John 5:7, which says: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”
Think of an octopus: its legs cannot work independently from the octopus; they function as part of the whole. Similarly, human body parts—head, arms, eyes, legs—cannot act alone. God gave us examples of the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost working as one entity.
-
Isaiah 40:25: “To whom then will ye liken Me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.”
-
Isaiah 40:28: “Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of His understanding.”
God is beyond description. He appeared in the world in three ways, yet remains one God.
-
After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to Mary, whom she thought was a gardener, and to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.
-
God appeared to Abraham as three men (Genesis 18:1-end).
-
He appeared to Joshua as captain of His hosts (Joshua 5:13-15), and to Manoah and his wife in Judges.
Jesus Christ and the Word
-
Hebrews 1:3: Jesus Christ is “the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power; when He had purged our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”
-
Hebrews 1:8: “But unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.”
-
John 14:8-11:
-
Philip asked, “Lord, show us the Father.”
-
Jesus replied, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father… the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works.”
-
We cannot fully understand the working of the Holy Spirit with our natural minds.
-
John 1:29: John sees Jesus and calls Him the Lamb of God. Believers accept this by faith, through the working of the Holy Spirit.
-
Revelation 5:6-12; Ezekiel 1:1-28: These passages reveal God’s power, believed by faith.
-
John 6:33-60: Eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus Christ is a spiritual act enabled by the Holy Spirit. The Jews rejected this, blinded by their carnal minds.
Note: Belief in Jesus is not by human effort, but through the Holy Spirit (John 4:24).
God as Spirit
-
John 4:24: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.”
-
John 6:63: “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak unto you are spirit and they are life.”
-
John 1:1, 1:14: The Word was with God, was God, became flesh, and dwelt among us. Jesus Christ is God in bodily form, “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14).
The Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ
-
Matthew 3:16: At Jesus’ baptism, the Spirit descended like a dove upon Him.
-
Luke 1:35: The Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary, and Jesus was conceived. The Holy Spirit is one and the same that came in bodily form as Jesus Christ.
-
Genesis 1:8: God’s presence was tangible, as in the Garden of Eden.
-
John 8:12: “I am the light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
-
John 1:4, 9: Jesus Christ is the true light that enlightens every man.
