Understanding the Word “Man” as Used by Jesus in Mark 2:27–28
By the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord made me understand that when Jesus used the word “man” in Mark 2:27–28, He was referring to mankind—not just the male gender, but all humanity.
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
— Mark 2:27–28
This meaning—mankind—has been clearly understood by Christians. Yet ironically, that understanding has contributed to why many have neglected the Seventh-day Sabbath, a commandment of the Lord.
Dictionary Definitions of “Man” and “Mankind”
Man (Merriam-Webster):
-
An adult male human being
-
A human being; person
-
The human race; mankind
-
A husband
-
An adult male servant or employee
Mankind (Cambridge Dictionary):
The whole of the human race, including both men and women.
This broader definition is key in understanding Christ’s intent in Mark 2. Jesus wasn’t speaking to only men, but to all people.
Biblical Use of “Mankind”
Consider these scriptures where “mankind” clearly refers to humanity as a whole:
-
Job 12:10 – In whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
-
1 Corinthians 6:9 – …abusers of themselves with mankind… shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
-
Leviticus 18:22 – Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
-
Leviticus 20:13 – If a man also lie with mankind… they shall surely be put to death.
The term “mankind” is consistently used to refer to the collective human race.
The Role of the Popes and the Sabbath
Now that we understand the term mankind includes all people, we can also reflect on the actions of the 269 Popes—living and dead—who, as the Bible describes, have acted in rebellion against God, Christ, and His church. These are the same powers described as Antichrists who have altered or dismissed God’s commandments, including the Sabbath.
A Vision from God (06-08-01)
In a vision, I saw a multitude dressed in white. As I became aware of my surroundings, I heard a deep, powerful voice say:
“Saturday is the day that I, the Lord, chose for all believers in Jesus Christ to observe for life. It is a sign of those set apart—those whose names are written in the Book of Life. Before the second coming of Christ, all My people around the world will keep the seventh-day Sabbath.”
The voice continued:
“I separated My people from the world before its foundation, because they are Mine. They do not belong to the world or its wickedness.”
I looked toward the voice and saw a hand like shining transparent glass, holding a book with these words written on it:
Amos 9:12 – That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by My name, saith the Lord that doeth this.
The Lord instructed me:
“My daughter, read this to the hearing of My people.”
What Is the Sabbath?
Isaiah 11:10 (NIV) says:
“In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to Him, and His resting place will be glorious.”
This shows that Christ is our rest. He instituted the Sabbath from the beginning (Genesis 2:1–3), handed it down to the Jews, and reaffirmed it in the Gospels:
Mark 2:28 – The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.
Leviticus 23:3 – It is the Sabbath of the Lord.
When we honor the Sabbath, we honor God Himself. It is a sign, in both Old and New Testaments, of our separation from the world and our dedication to Him.
God’s Command to Keep the Sabbath
Deuteronomy 5:14–15 (NIV):
The seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out… Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
While today’s believers may say, “We are not slaves in Egypt,” we are slaves to sin—the original sin from Adam and Eve. But through Jesus Christ, we are redeemed.
Why the Sabbath Still Matters
Christ, our Rest, not only kept the Sabbath, He clarified its purpose: to do good, to save life, and to honor God.
“Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil? To save life, or to kill?” – Jesus (Gospels)
The Sabbath is more than a day. It’s a sign between God and His people. Observing it is a declaration: We belong to Him—not to this world, not to its systems, and certainly not to the traditions that have replaced God’s commands with human ones.
