What I am about to say here concerns a divine revelation I received from the Almighty Lord Jesus Christ regarding the three words: Vicarius Filii Dei.
It was not what many writers, historians, or people of all ages have written. Rather, it was a direct revelation from the Lord, who made me understand His hidden agenda of making Himself known. The Lord Jesus Christ revealed to me the truth about these three words, which are written on the pope’s miter—a title that has been worn by many popes, beginning with the evil Linus, the first bishop who elevated himself to the first Pope of Rome.
In this vision, the Holy Spirit placed me in a well-lit environment, with light so bright and illuminating. In front of me appeared a lavishly decorated miter, sparkling with precious stones of many colors, shining and adorned gloriously. This miter was suspended in the clouds.
As I fixed my eyes in amazement on this beautiful miter, I saw the words written in bold red letters: “VICARIUS FILII DEI.” I was shocked to see this inside the clouds. While I was still wondering, the voice of the Lord spoke:
“My daughter, My daughter, I the Lord show you what the men of sin wore and still believe. These evil people are crowned with these words before they can be pronounced Pope or enter the Papacy.
My daughter, I the Lord am sending you to the world. Tell My saints to separate themselves from these evil people and stop worshiping them.
My appointed day for worship is the seventh day of the week, which I, the Lord, have blessed, hallowed, and purposed before the foundation of the world.
My daughter, the things of man may change, but My Word will never change.
Go, tell My saints and the world this Word of Mine. I am the Lord—I do not change.
Tell My saints to obey My feast days, My commandments, My New Year. All these I have used as My seal upon My churches to set them apart from the evil world.”
Now, I can tell you saints and the world that these three words—Vicarius Filii Dei—were first used by the evil Linus of Titus, during the reign of Emperor Titus. Linus, the first Bishop of Rome, “fell away” from the true church of Jesus Christ and began the apostate Roman Catholic Church.
The bishop’s antagonistic ideas were planned, patterned, and purposed by the man of sin—known as the apostate Linus, the beginning of the papal line. But he could not carry out his plan without the help of Emperor Titus. Linus sought a deceitful way to separate from the true Church of Christ.
He believed it would be clever to name a church in a way that would honor Rome, knowing Emperor Titus would support it. Linus also knew that Rome was full of idol worship and that honoring the Roman sun goddesses would be well-received by both the emperor and the Roman citizens.
Without delay, Linus consulted Emperor Titus, who quickly approved the proposal. The bishop then declared that the first day of the week should be a day of rest and worship for the Roman sun goddesses. He elevated himself as the head of the newly formed apostate Roman Catholic Church, taking the title Vicarius Filii Dei, meaning “Vicar of the Son of God.”
In his rebellion, he removed the seventh-day Sabbath and replaced it with the first day of the week, contrary to God’s commandment. He altered the Ten Commandments by removing the fourth commandment and dividing the tenth into two.
His deceitful motive, fueled by Satan’s pride, led him to make himself the head of the church, falsely claiming to be the successor of the Apostle Peter—a complete lie. Peter was never part of this apostate lineage, but Linus lied to assert his authority.
By claiming the title Vicarius Filii Dei, he declared himself reverend, infallible, and possessing the authority to change God’s laws. This is exactly what was prophesied in Daniel 7:25, where it says:
“And he shall speak great words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.”
Though many disagreed with the Bishop of Rome, his antichrist attitude – through deceit, sorcery, false miracles, and other cunning means—enabled him to take control of Rome. He introduced false doctrines such as idol worship, the idolization of Mary, worshiping angels, and even the veneration of dead bodies (called relics) as protection.
Inside the city of Rome, the apostate bishop created his own sovereign state: Vatican City, the smallest and wealthiest nation on Earth.
The Phrase: “Vicarius Filii Dei” — Historical Origins and Interpretations
1. Alleged Origin and Early Use
The phrase “Vicarius Filii Dei”, meaning “Vicar (or Vicegerent) of the Son of God”, is allegedly first mentioned by Linus, the apostate bishop of Rome, as the title by which he insisted on being addressed.
According to some accounts, Linus also forged a bishop’s decree, supposedly with the backing of Emperor Titus the Great, which transferred ecclesiastical authority over Rome and the western Roman Empire to the apostate bishop. This action marked the foundation of the apostate Roman Catholic Church, and Linus eventually elevated himself to the position of “Pope” in the 4th century.
However, the document known as the Donation of Constantine—which is often associated with this claim—was likely composed in the 8th century and used in the 13th century to justify papal claims to temporal power. It contains a Latin phrase that closely resembles this concept:
“…ut sicut in terris vicarius Filii Dei esse videtur constitutus etiam et pontifices…”
(“…so that as the Vicar of the Son of God seems to be established on earth, so too are the pontiffs…”)
2. Protestant Claims and Numerological Interpretation
The earliest known Protestant reference to the phrase “Vicarius Filii Dei” is by Andreas Helwig in his 1612 book Antichristus Romanus. Helwig selected 15 titles in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin, converting their letters to numerical values using their respective alphabets. He claimed that “Vicarius Filii Dei” added up to 666, the number of the beast in Revelation 13:18.
How the number is calculated:
-
V = 5
-
I = 1
-
C = 100
-
A, R = (not used as numerals)
-
I = 1
-
U = 5 (Latin U = V)
-
S = (not used)
-
F = (not used)
-
L = 50
-
D = 500
-
E = (not used)
Total: 5 + 1 + 100 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 50 + 1 + 1 + 500 + 1 = 666
This calculation became a key point in identifying the papacy as the Antichrist in historic Protestant eschatology.
3. Catholic Response to the Claims
Catholic scholars have strongly refuted the idea that “Vicarius Filii Dei” is an official papal title. Their responses emphasize:
-
The phrase has never been part of the official list of papal titles.
-
No existing papal tiaras bear the inscription.
-
Over 20 surviving papal tiaras, including those used during Pope Pius IX’s reign in 1866, do not contain this phrase.
-
Earlier tiaras destroyed during the French invasion of 1798 do not have documented evidence of bearing this inscription either.
4. Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Response
In November 1948, The Ministry magazine—an official SDA publication—featured an article by editor LeRoy Edwin Froom, titled “Dubious Pictures of the Tiara”. The article stated:
“Each pope, like any other sovereign, has his own tiara… Personal examination of these various tiaras… has failed to disclose one engraved with the inscription Vicarius Filii Dei…
As heralds of truth, we are to proclaim the truth truthfully. No fabrication should ever becloud our presentation of truth…
Truth does not need fabrication to aid or support it. We must honor the truth, and meticulously observe the principle of honesty in the handling of evidence under all circumstances.”
This reflects a commitment by the SDA Church to accurate historical evidence, warning against relying on dubious or unverified claims.
5. William Branham’s Statements
William Branham, a mid-20th-century Pentecostal minister and founder of the Branhamite movement, strongly endorsed the traditional Protestant view of the papacy as the Antichrist and made the following assertions:
-
Claimed to have personally seen the phrase “VICARIVS FILII DEI” written above the pope’s throne in the Vatican.
-
Affirmed the numerical calculation of 666 from the phrase.
-
Taught that this phrase means “instead of the Son of God”, supporting the idea that the pope positions himself as Christ on earth.
-
Asserted that Rome is the city on seven hills referred to in Revelation 17, and that the pope wears a triple crown, representing his claimed authority over Heaven, Earth, and Purgatory/Hell.
“He opposes himself above all that is called God… sets in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God… forgiving sins on earth.”
— Branham, citing 2 Thessalonians 2 and Revelation 13
