Pontiff Says Late Nun Shamed World Leaders Who Created ‘Crime of Poverty’
By Harriet Sherwood in Rome

Homeless People Given Seats of Honour
It was a typical Pope Francis gesture, in line with the extraordinary life of Saint Teresa of Kolkata, who was canonized on Sunday.
On the pope’s orders, 1,500 homeless people were brought to Rome overnight on buses from across Italy to be given seats of honour at the ceremony. Mother Teresa is revered worldwide for her work with the destitute and dying.
Also at the Vatican were a Naples pizza maker and twenty of his workers, invited to provide lunch for the homeless. The meal was served by 250 nuns and priests from the Sisters of Charity.
Celebrating Two Saints
Many in the massive crowds around St Peter’s Square were celebrating two figures they see as saints: Mother Teresa and Pope Francis, who has dedicated his papacy to mercy, humility, and serving the marginalized.
In his homily during the two-hour mass, Francis said the petite Albanian nun had shamed world leaders for the “crime of poverty” they had created.
“She bowed before those left to die on the side of the road, seeing their God-given dignity; she made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created,” he said on the steps of St Peter’s Basilica, beneath a huge portrait of Mother Teresa.
He urged this “emblematic figure of womanhood” and “tireless worker of mercy” to be a model of holiness for Catholics and others.
In the crowd, Francis Gojcaj from Detroit said: “No one can be as good as Jesus Christ, but she’s pretty close.” Gojcaj, an American of Albanian heritage, was shielding his seven-month-old daughter, Georgiana, from the sun. “She gave her whole life to the poor,” he said.
Missionaries of Charity and Global Attendance
Several hundred nuns in St Peter’s Square wore the distinctive blue and white robes of the Missionaries of Charity, the order Mother Teresa founded in Kolkata in 1950. It now runs 758 homes, hospices, and shelters in 139 countries.
Around 100,000 tickets were issued for the mass, but thousands more turned up. Police and volunteers managed the crowds, while Red Cross workers handed out water. Thirteen countries sent heads of state or government delegations, including 100 officials from India. Queen Sofia of Spain was among the dignitaries.
Canonization Ceremony
The mass began with hymns but quickly moved to formalities. Cardinal Angelo Amato read a description of Mother Teresa’s work and asked the pope to canonize her. Francis declared:
“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint, and we enroll her among the saints, to be venerated by the whole Church.”
Later, he joked that people would still call her Mother Teresa rather than Saint Teresa.
Commemorations in Kolkata
In Kolkata, a commemoration was held at Mother House, the Missionaries’ headquarters, with hundreds attending a mass near her tomb. Participants held candles and laid flowers beneath a large portrait.
Sister Blesilla called it “a day of gratitude, prayer, and thanksgiving.” Well-wisher Sumita Tandon said Mother Teresa had “made the city of Kolkata proud … She was an inspiration to me.”
Criticism and Controversy
The canonization also revived criticism of Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity. Critics claim her work focused more on elevation than relief of suffering. Allegations include inadequate medical care, harsh treatment of patients, and reusing syringes without sterilization. Some critics also questioned her political contacts and management of large sums of money.
In Rome, however, criticism was dismissed by the crowds. Paul Spiteri, 69, from Malta, said: “Everyone faces criticism. They even criticize Jesus Christ.” Shamini Chakupurayil, 19, from Kerala, said Indian Catholics were especially proud. Lynne Semkiw, a recent convert from California, called entering St Peter’s Square “a very spiritual moment.”
Pope Francis Greets the Crowd
After the mass, Pope Francis greeted the crowd from his popemobile, reaching out to touch the heads of several infants.
Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in 1910 in what is now Macedonia, was proclaimed a saint 19 years after her death in 1997. Two miracles attributed to her were recognized as part of the canonization process. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, accepting it “in the name of the hungry, the naked, the homeless; of the crippled, the blind, the lepers, of all those who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for.”
Saintly Legacy
Since his election in March 2013, Pope Francis has canonized 29 saints, roughly one every six weeks. This is slower than Pope John Paul II, who canonized 482 over 26 years. Francis also canonized John XXIII, Sri Lanka’s first saint Joseph Vaz, and Louis and Zélie Martin, the first married couple canonized together.
In September last year, Francis canonized Junipero Serra, a Spanish missionary involved in colonizing California, despite protests from Native Americans.
