It’s a tradition in many Roman Catholic families to designate a place in the home to share their faith – a sacred space where they can pray or simply sit in silence in the presence of God. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the demand for home altars, especially in places where churches remained closed.
In the Catholic Church, the altar is the central structure upon which the Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. It’s usually located in the sanctuary, the area of the church that draws the congregation’s focus. At the start of a Roman Rite Mass, the priest reverences the altar with a kiss before proceeding to the chair to begin the Introductory Rites and the Liturgy of the Word. In the Tridentine Mass (1962 Missal), the priest remains at the altar after the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, except in a Solemn Mass.
The Dedication of a Church and Altar emphasizes the significance of the Eucharist, calling it “the principal and the most ancient part of the whole rite.” It notes that the Eucharist, which sanctifies the hearts of those who receive it, also consecrates the altar and the space itself. Early Church Fathers described the altar as something to be revered: “By nature it is stone, but it is made holy when it receives the body of Christ.”
In the Byzantine Rite, the same word (βωμός in Greek) is often used for both the altar and the area surrounding it (the sanctuary). To be more specific, terms like “Holy Table” (Ἁγία Τράπεζα) or “Throne” are used.
Many Catholic families have embraced the idea of a home altar—also known as a family altar, prayer table, or altar table. While the term “home altar” might sound intimidating, it doesn’t have to be elaborate or formal. It’s simply a designated space that serves as a spiritual anchor in the home.
