Why these five sins are so serious
Why are these sins so serious that those who commit them face condemnation in such strong terms? What makes them so evil as to merit such judgment?

Once common pictures of Hell
Before the Council, images of Hell were commonly displayed as a stark warning. The answer to why these five sins are so serious must lie in their connection to the many souls lost to Hell. We know that the devotion to the Immaculate Heart is God’s remedy for saving many souls. This devotion, therefore, must directly oppose the primary cause of so many people being eternally separated from Christ. Its purpose is to repair the five sins committed against the Virgin, which are truly responsible for many failing to attain salvation and the Beatific Vision.
It’s important to distinguish between two types of sinners: those who do not intentionally block the flow of grace available to all, and those who deliberately hinder it through sins of blasphemy and ingratitude. The latter group, if left unchecked, would spread their poison throughout the Mystical Body of Christ. The Immaculate Heart Devotion acts as the necessary antidote, protecting the faithful from the harmful effects of these five sins. This devotion renews the strength needed to battle the Devil and his forces and shows the constant love and mercy with which the Holy Trinity supports the members of the Church.
With this understanding, we are ready to examine the mystery of iniquity at work by analyzing these five sins and how they restrict grace by undermining belief in the Virgin’s sacred vocation. To grasp this evil, we will compare the five sins with the four acts of the First Saturday Devotion. Both reveal a progression—from a general description of Our Lady’s role to a detailed, specific explanation.
The five sins represent a complete and escalating denial of her role, while the First Saturday Devotion is a thorough and detailed affirmation of it. Each sin attacks a particular prerogative of Our Lady, with each privilege representing a deeper aspect of her sacred mission. The sins become increasingly destructive, each one further blocking the flow of grace from her Immaculate Heart and causing more souls to be lost.
Following the order given by Our Lord in 1930, we see how the sacred mission of Our Lady unfolds through these sins. Each one reveals a more direct assault on the Blessed Mother and the Mystical Body of Christ.
The first sin: Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception
The first stage of Satan’s total war against the Virgin begins with blasphemies that deny her Immaculate Conception.

The Immaculate Conception
The Immaculate Conception
Did God really create the Holy Virgin, from the very first moment of her life, fully immaculate and endowed with the all-encompassing graces of that pure conception? Does He sustain those graces throughout human history? If not, then all truths built on this foundation would collapse. Mary’s entire sacred vocation depends on this truth. Allowing the first sin to weaken or erase this belief in the hearts of the faithful practically guarantees the loss of countless souls.
This prerogative of Mary—a dogma solemnly proclaimed by the Catholic Church—is not merely a pious or secondary belief, as some modern theologians might suggest. Without this gift from God, she could not have fulfilled her role as the “new Eve,” nor merited the many titles and prerogatives of her sacred mission. She would not have been chosen to be the Mother of Christ and His Mystical Body.
The importance of this privilege will become even clearer as we examine the other sins. At this stage, Our Lady was entirely passive—she simply received the gift, with no active role. The next four phases, however, tell the story of her acting on the fullness of the graces granted by the Immaculate Conception, revealing her sacred mission in greater detail.
The second sin: Blasphemies against Our Lady’s perpetual virginity
In the second stage, the Devil attacks Mary’s perpetual virginity. Here, the perfect harmony between Mary and the all-powerful graces she received is denied. Her cooperation was total and flawless—there was not one moment of weakness or imperfection.
While virginity is the focus of this mystery, the deeper issue is her complete and unmatched acceptance of these super-abundant graces. Think about it: she received all-powerful graces from God and cooperated with each perfectly and without blemish.
This incredible mystery comes from the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost, which created a perfect union between the Virgin and the Third Person of the Trinity, her Immaculate Spouse. Denying Mary’s cooperation in this way is, in effect, rejecting the Holy Ghost’s role as the guarantor of her perfect collaboration.
To attack or diminish her perpetual virginity—as some modern theologians do—is to undermine the divine plan, where the Sanctifier (the Holy Ghost) works salvation through His most holy Spouse.
Moreover, Mary not only cooperated fully but also had the perfect intention to do so. Her will and intellect, untouched by original sin, were entirely united with the desires of the Holy Ghost—namely, the Redemption of all people and the salvation of the elect.
What fruit would result from such a sublime union? It’s not beyond our understanding. If ordinary people can cooperate with grace to achieve good results, and saints can do great works, then what incredible effects would come from Mary’s flawless response to these indescribable graces?
The third sin: Blasphemies against Our Lady’s Divine Maternity
The fruit of that perfect union—the sacred work prompted by the Holy Ghost—brings us to the third stage of the attack: the denial of Mary’s Divine Maternity and her Spiritual Motherhood of all people.
This third sin is especially damaging. It not only robs Mary of her Divine and Mystical Child but also denies her right to be the spiritual mother of all mankind. It nullifies her rightful role in enlisting her spiritual children as agents of her Divine Spouse in carrying out His plan to save the elect.
St. Maximilian Kolbe, the Franciscan priest who died at Auschwitz, explained this profound union between the Holy Ghost and the Virgin of Nazareth clearly. He said:
“So, while their union is not of the same order as the hypostatic union linking the human and divine natures in Christ, it remains true to say that Mary’s action is the very action of the Holy Ghost. For Mary, as the Spouse of the Holy Ghost, is raised to such a height of perfection above all creatures that she accomplishes in everything the will of the Holy Ghost Who dwelt in her from the first instant of her conception.” (13)
Through this intimate union, the Holy Ghost, the Sanctifier, working through His holy Spouse, could conceive, give birth to, nurture, and offer as a sacrifice—past, present, and future—both the Divine Child as Head and the elect as members of the Mystical Body of Christ. This sacrifice, renewed daily on altars worldwide, merits the redemptive graces which the Holy Ghost applies through Mary’s Immaculate Heart. This is her sacred mission, with the Holy Ghost as her divine Sponsor.

Pilgrims in Fatima making reparation for sins and asking for graces

A penitential pilgrim in Fatima
Deny this truth or let it fade in the hearts of the faithful, and you’ll see the enormous harvest of souls claimed by the enemy of Christ. Since the cooperation of the Mystical Body of Christ is vital, diminishing this effort reduces the number of souls saved. People cannot be saved unless they want to be and actively work toward it. For that reason, it’s absolutely essential that the graces of Redemption be applied to them by the Holy Ghost, working through Mary’s maternal bosom, who distributes these graces as part of her Sacred Commission.
The amount of these saving graces the Mediatrix of All Graces can bestow largely depends on how much the faithful willingly allow her to work through them each day in fulfilling her mission. Our Lady at Fatima made this clear in her August apparition: “Pray, pray very much, and make sacrifices for sinners; so many souls go to Hell because there is no one to pray and make sacrifices for them.” (14)
Since 1917, the situation has not improved. If anything, this plea is even more urgent today. With this sorrowful call ringing in our hearts, we must recognize how critical it is for Mary’s children to consciously become her willing clients, carrying out daily the wish of her Divine Spouse: sanctification.
Satan’s goal, at all costs, is to destroy the belief that the faithful, through the daily re-enactment of Calvary at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, can also offer themselves as victims, imitating that Redemptive Sacrifice in some way. Since the graces given depend heavily on the recipient’s disposition, this belief is vital to humanity’s eternal destiny.
Any attempt to deny or obscure this part of Mary’s mission helps the devil’s attack on the Mystical Body of Christ and significantly reduces the number of the elect. If left unopposed, the third sin achieves this goal. The remedy is for Mary’s children to grow ever more united with her in mind and will so they can become her primary agents.
