Recent Developments in Berlin Regarding LGBTQ and the Catholic Church

The Berlin Archdiocese announced that Archbishop Heiner Koch will appoint a pastoral minister to serve as a contact person for gays.
According to the German Catholic news agency KNA, Archbishop Koch made this pledge during a meeting with representatives of the Lesbian and Gay Association of Berlin-Brandenburg. He said the move is important to address marginalization and discrimination of the LGBTQ community within the church without fear.
Koch described the double marginalization of Catholic gays — both within the Catholic community and the LGBTQ community — as “problematic and painful.”
The discussion, requested by the Lesbian and Gay Association, aimed to address contradictions in the Catholic Church’s stance and the solidarity shown toward LGBTQ people, especially following the Vatican’s renewed rejection last March of blessings for homosexual couples.
Ulrich Kessler, board member of the Lesbian and Gay Association of Berlin-Brandenburg, expressed surprise and excitement that rainbow flags appeared on Catholic Church spires and that many congregations called for blessing services.
Koch asked for understanding that, as bishop, “for the sake of the unity of the church, I cannot disregard such a position from Rome.” At the same time, he affirmed his commitment “without reservation to award God’s blessing to the love and relationship of people.”
He promised to continue the discussion, including within the Synodal Path reform project of the Catholic Church in Germany.
However, he also expressed concern “when church political pressure should be exerted by means of blessing services.”
This was widely seen as a reference to the “Love Wins” action in May, when many Catholic churches across Germany held blessing services for same-sex and divorced couples in protest against the Vatican.
