Signs and wonders, visions and miracles, are pretended; but they are false signs to support false doctrines; and lying wonders, or only pretended miracles, to cheat the people; and the diabolical deceits with which the Antichrist state has been supported, are notorious, wicked and destructive. The festival of Corpus Christi celebrates the Eucharist as the body of Christ. The name ‘Corpus Christi’ is Latin for ‘the body of Christ’.

The main feature of Corpus Christi celebrations is the triumphant liturgical procession in which the sacred host (the wafer that has been consecrated during the Mass) is carried out of the Church “for the Christian faithful to make public profession of faith and worship of the Most Blessed Sacrament”.
The practice is no longer common in the UK, where traditional processions started to wane in the 1970s after the Second Vatican Council. Attempts have been made to revive the tradition in some UK towns and villages in recent years.
During his papacy, Pope John Paul II led an annual Corpus Christi procession from St Peter’s Square in the Vatican to the streets of Rome. Many traditional Catholics are keen for such processions to be promoted everywhere in the world in the light of the late Pope’s example.

The festival was inspired by the religious experience of St Juliana (1193-1258), a Belgian nun, who dreamed repeatedly of the Church under a full moon with a black spot.
According to legend, the dream was interpreted to her in a vision by Christ. The moon, she said, was the Church’s calendarof festivals and the black spot was the lack of a festival to celebrate the holiest element of the Church – the Eucharist.
Juliana shared this with her local bishop, who in 1246 issued a decree for such a festival to be celebrated in his territory.
The festival was instituted throughout the Church by Pope Urban IV in 1264. Before that there had been no universal festival to mark the sacrament of the Eucharist.

The festival has a particular resonance for Spain and Portugal, and countries in Latin America. In Seville the festival was known as ‘the Thursday that shines greater than the sun’.
In such countries the festival is popular and elaborate. The triumphal nature of the celebration is acted out by treating the sacred host almost as if it were a military hero returning in victory from the wars – the host may be carried on a cart (representing a chariot) through crowds and beneath triumphal arches erected for the event.
Historically, the festival was accompanied by music, dancing and fireworks.

Palm Sunday — or is it Passion Sunday? — marks the beginning of Holy Week.
This day commemorates not one but two very significant events in the life of Christ.
Here are 9 things you need to know.
1. What is this day called?
The day is called both “Palm Sunday” and “Passion Sunday.” The bible did not say anyone should use it as feast or celebration whatsoever
The first name comes from the fact that it commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when the crowd had palm branches (John 12:13).
The second name comes from the fact that the narrative of the Passion is read on this Sunday (it otherwise wouldn’t be read on a Sunday, since the next Sunday is about the Resurrection).

The blessing, which takes place at midday or when he touring days on Sunday, is one of the most cherished traditions of the Catholic church, and this was one of Benedict’s last opportunities to connect with the masses.

The Angelus blessing normally attracts a few thousand pilgrims and tourists, but city officials prepared for a crush of people seeking to witness a moment of history.
“We wanted to wish him well,” said Amy Champion, a tourist from Wales. “It takes a lot of guts to take the job and even more guts … to quit.”
Rome put on extra buses and underground trains to help deal with the crowds and offered free shuttle vans for elderly and disabled people.
After Sunday evening the pope will be out of the public eye for a week. A meditation service at the Vatican marks the beginning of the traditional Lenten period of reflection and prayer.
While cardinals elect his successor next month in a conclave in the Sistine Chapel, Benedict will be in retreat at the Holy See’s summer estate in the hills south-east of Rome. After several weeks he is expected to move into a monastery being refurbished for him behind the Vatican City walls, where he will lead a largely cloistered life.
The Vatican has not announced a date for the start of the conclave but said on Saturday that it might start sooner than 15 March, the earliest date it can be launched under current rules. Benedict would have to sign off on any earlier date, an act that would be one of the last of his nearly eight-year papacy.
The first cardinals have started arriving in Rome to begin a period of intense politicking to decide who are the leading candidates to be the next pope. The Guinea-born archbishop Robert Sarah, a cardinal who leads the Vatican’s charity office, told reporters when he arrived that the churchmen should select their new leader with “serenity and trust”.
Pope Francis used Sunday’s (August 26) homily in Dublin’s Phoenix Park to ask for the Church to be forgiven for “abuses in Ireland” conducted by members of the clergy.
An organiser of Sunday’s papal Mass in the Phoenix Park has estimated that 200,000 people attended the Dublin event, based on the amount of communion used.
Fr Damian McNeice said on Monday that the figure was an anecdotal “guesstimate” and that he had “no idea” of the actual number.
Dr Patrick Plunkett, the medical director of the site’s field hospital, said on Sunday that he believed 130,000 people had attended the Mass. Some 500,000 people were expected in the Phoenix Park Mass but the actual turnout on the day was significantly smaller. The Vatican had estimated the attendance at 300,000.
Asked on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland to comment on the numbers in attendance, Fr McNeice said the crowd was “way beyond my expectations”.
“I couldn’t believe the number of people that actually turned up yesterday” he said, citing the poor weather and heavy rain as reasons for people to stay home.
Fr McNeice said his estimation of 200,000 was based on the 370,000 communion hosts prepared for holy communion at the Mass, saying that more than half had been used during the event.
The environments team were tasked with texturing all of these well-known locations using digital matte painting techniques including re-creating Michelangelo’s masterpiece on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
The story centres around two key changes of Pope in 2005 and 2013, events which attracted huge attention, filling St Peter’s Square with devotees eager to discover the identity of the new Pope and celebrate their ascension. News crews from around the world also camp out to provide coverage for the billions of Catholics all over the world. To recreate these scenes the crew shot at a school in Rome (Ponte Mammolo) that has the same pattern on its floor. A cast of 300 extras were shot in blocks in different positions at different times of day, with costume tweaks including the addition of umbrellas to build a library to provide enough flexibility during postproduction to recreate these pivotal moments at different times of day and in different weather conditions.
Union also used Clear Angle to individually scan 50 extras to provide additional options for the VFX team.
This was an ambitious crowd project. We couldn’t shoot in the location and the end result had to stand up at 4K in very close proximity to the camera.

While working on the film, Union designed a Houdini based system to cope with the unprecedented number of assets and their clothing in a way that the team could easily art direct them as individuals, allow the Director to choreograph them and deliver a believable result.
Several motion capture shoots were conducted in house at Union to provide some specific animation cycles that married with the occasions the team were recreating. This provided even more flexibility to the team during postproduction resulting authentic looking crowds.
Union worked on a total of 288 VFX shots including green screens, set extensions, window reflections, muzzle flashes, fog and rain and a storm that included a lightning strike on the Basilica.

The Vatican palace is the residence of the pope within the city walls. The Holy See is the name given to the government of the Roman Catholic Church, which is led by the pope as the bishop of Rome. As such, the Holy See’s authority extends over Catholics throughout the world. In 1984 a major reshuffle of offices in the Roman Curiaresulted in the delegation of the routine administration of Vatican City to a pontifically appointed commission of five cardinals headed by the Secretariat of State. The inhabitants of Vatican City, the majority of whom are priests and nuns, also include several hundred laypersons engaged in secretarial, domestic, trade, and service occupations.

Vatican cultural life has much declined since the Renaissance, when the popes were among Italy’s foremost patrons of the arts. The Vatican Museums and Galleries, the frescoes by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, the frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Borgia Apartment, and Raphael’s Stanze (“Rooms”) nevertheless attract critics, artists, and flocks of tourists from throughout the world. Years of restoration work on the Sistine Chapel frescoes were completed in 1994, making it possible to view Michelangelo’s work in full vibrant colours. In 2000 the millennial Jubilee focused world attention on Vatican City.

Pope Francis has declared John XXIII and John Paul II saints in the first-ever dual canonization.
Pope Francis and his predecessor, Benedict XVI, presided over the April 27 ceremony at the Vatican to recognize two of the most charismatic modern leaders of the Catholic Church as saints.
“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II saints and we enroll them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church,” Pope Benedict told the crowd.
The mass took place at St. Peter’s Square and was being attended by some 150 cardinals and 1,000 bishops.
As many as 1 million people were expected to pack the square and nearby streets of Rome to witness the televised event.
John Paul II was born in Poland as Karol Wojtyla and widely credited for contributing to the collapse of communism during his 1978-2005 papacy.
John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in Italy, became known as “Good Pope John” while he led the Vatican in 1958-63.
