The Papacy instituted All Saints’ Day
All Catholic Churches celebrate all the dead people that the Papacy has canonized as saints.
Popes are politicians, first-class celebrities, and nearly the entire world adores them. Through their influence, they attract huge crowds everywhere they go.
Upcoming Papal Event in Philadelphia (2015)
About 1.5 million people will crowd into Benjamin Franklin Parkway to see Pope Francis. They will want to use their cell phones to take pictures and videos to share on Instagram or Snapchat.
This will put heavy strain on cellular and WiFi networks. AT&T and Verizon Wireless spent a combined $47 million in Philadelphia to increase network capacity, but supporting so many people in such a small area will still be very difficult.
Andrea Goldsmith, an engineering professor at Stanford, said, “It’s going to be very difficult to support that many people no matter what they do, even if money was not an object.”
The Pope’s Blessing from St. Peter’s Square
Pope Benedict blessed the faithful from his window overlooking St. Peter’s Square for the first time since announcing his resignation, cheered by tens of thousands of pilgrims from around the world.
-
Benedict’s penultimate Angelus blessing was warmly received by a crowd of at least 50,000 people.
-
He spoke in multiple languages and asked the crowd to “continue praying for me and for the next pope.”
-
The Vatican hinted Benedict may be called the emeritus bishop of Rome after retirement.
City officials prepared for a large crowd by increasing public transportation and offering free shuttle vans for elderly and disabled visitors.
After his final public appearance, Benedict retired to the Holy See’s summer estate and then to a monastery behind Vatican walls, where he leads a cloistered life.
Papal Conclave and Election
The date for the next pope’s election was uncertain, but the first cardinals began arriving in Rome to begin politicking. Cardinal Robert Sarah urged churchmen to choose their new leader with “serenity and trust.”
Pope Francis in Dublin (August 26)
In Dublin’s Phoenix Park, Pope Francis asked the Church to be forgiven for abuses in Ireland by members of the clergy.
Estimates of attendance at the Mass varied: an organizer suggested 200,000 people based on communion use, while the medical director estimated 130,000. The Vatican had expected 300,000.
Visual Effects for “The Two Popes” Film
The film recreates two key papal changes in 2005 and 2013, filling St. Peter’s Square with large crowds. Since filming on location was impossible, the crew used a school in Rome with a similar floor pattern and shot 300 extras in various positions with costume changes.
Union VFX used advanced techniques to create realistic crowds at 4K resolution, employing motion capture and custom animation cycles for authenticity.
Vatican City: The Smallest Independent State
-
Population (2013 est.): 800
-
Form of government: Papacy
-
Total area: 0.44 sq km (0.17 sq mi)
Vatican City is an ecclesiastical state and the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, enclosed within Rome on the west bank of the Tiber River.
St. Peter’s Basilica, built over the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle, is one of the largest religious buildings in Christendom.
The Vatican palace is the pope’s residence, and the Holy See governs Catholics worldwide.
The city-state has its own telephone system, post office, radio, banking system, pharmacy, and Swiss Guards responsible for the pope’s safety since 1506.
Almost all supplies must be imported, and Vatican City has no income tax. Its income comes from contributions by over one billion Catholics, investments, and sales of stamps and publications.
The Lateran Treaty of 1929 recognized Vatican City’s sovereignty. The pope exercises absolute executive, legislative, and judicial powers within the city.
Vatican Apostolic Library and Media
The Vatican Apostolic Library holds about 150,000 manuscripts and 1.6 million printed books, some dating back to pre-Christian times.
The Vatican publishes the influential newspaper L’Osservatore Romano in 30 languages and produces television and radio programming heard worldwide.
Vatican City was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984.
The Papacy is the head of the Roman Catholic Churches all over the world.
The Papacy is infallible
Popes John, John Paul Canonized in Rome Spectacle
THE DEAD BODY OF POPE JOHN PAUL II MADE TO À. SAINT BY THE ANTICHRISTS
April 27, 2014 09:07 GMT
The crowd gathered on St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican for the dual canonization ceremony on April 27.

Pope Francis has declared John XXIII and John Paul II saints in the first-ever dual canonization.
Pope Francis and his predecessor, Benedict XVI, presided over the April 27 ceremony at the Vatican to recognize two of the most charismatic modern leaders of the Catholic Church as saints.
“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II saints and we enroll them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church,” Pope Benedict told the crowd.
The Mass took place at St. Peter’s Square and was attended by some 150 cardinals and 1,000 bishops. As many as 1 million people were expected to pack the square and nearby streets of Rome to witness the televised event.
John Paul II was born in Poland as Karol Wojtyla and is widely credited with contributing to the collapse of communism during his 1978–2005 papacy. John XXIII, born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in Italy, became known as “Good Pope John” while leading the Vatican from 1958 to 1963.
How Did Christmas Start?
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration worldwide. Centuries before the arrival of Jesus Christ, early Europeans celebrated light and birth during the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of winter was behind them and longer days with more sunlight were ahead.
In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21 (the winter solstice) through January. Fathers and sons would bring home large logs to set on fire. The people feasted until the log burned out, which could take up to 12 days. The Norse believed each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf to be born in the coming year.
At the end of December in much of Europe, cattle were slaughtered to avoid feeding them through winter, providing fresh meat. Most wine and beer made during the year was also finally ready for drinking.
In Germany, people honored the pagan god Odin during the mid-winter holiday. Germans feared Odin’s nocturnal flights through the sky, where he observed people and decided who would prosper or perish. Because of this, many chose to stay indoors.
Saturnalia
In Rome, where winters were milder, Saturnalia—a holiday honoring Saturn, the god of agriculture—was celebrated. Beginning the week before the winter solstice and lasting a full month, Saturnalia was a hedonistic time with abundant food and drink, and a reversal of social order. Enslaved people were temporarily freed and treated as equals, while businesses and schools closed so all could join the festivities.
Around the same time, Romans observed Juvenalia, a feast honoring the children of Rome. Upper classes often celebrated the birthday of Mithra, the god of the unconquerable sun, on December 25. Mithra, an infant god born of a rock, had his birthday considered the most sacred day of the year by some Romans.
Is Christmas Really the Day Jesus Was Born?
In early Christianity, Easter was the main holiday, and Jesus’ birth was not celebrated. In the fourth century, church officials established the birth of Jesus as a holiday. The Bible does not mention the date of his birth, a fact later used by Puritans to question the celebration’s legitimacy. Some evidence suggests Jesus was born in spring (shepherds herding in winter would be unlikely), but Pope Julius I chose December 25. This date likely aimed to absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival.
The Feast of the Nativity spread to Egypt by 432 and to England by the late sixth century. Holding Christmas at the same time as winter solstice festivals increased its popularity but limited control over how it was celebrated. By the Middle Ages, Christianity had mostly replaced pagan religions. Christmas became a raucous, carnival-like holiday with drunken celebrations, similar to today’s Mardi Gras. Each year, a beggar or student was crowned “lord of misrule,” and the poor demanded food and drink from the rich, often using mischief to enforce their demands.
When Christmas Was Cancelled
In the early 17th century, religious reform changed Christmas celebrations. When Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan forces took over England in 1645, they vowed to rid the country of decadence and canceled Christmas. The holiday returned when Charles II was restored to the throne.
The Pilgrims, English separatists who arrived in America in 1620, were even stricter Puritans. Christmas was not celebrated in early America and was outlawed in Boston from 1659 to 1681, with fines for those who showed Christmas spirit. However, in Jamestown, Captain John Smith reported Christmas was enjoyed without incident.
After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. The holiday was not declared a federal holiday in the U.S. until June 26, 1870.
Washington Irving Reinvents Christmas
Christmas was embraced in America mainly during the 19th century, shifting from a wild carnival to a family-centered holiday. The early 1800s were marked by class conflict, high unemployment, and Christmas riots, which led to New York City forming its first police force in 1828.
In 1819, Washington Irving published The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, gent., featuring stories of Christmas celebrations in an English manor. Irving imagined Christmas as a peaceful holiday where classes mingled, celebrating ancient customs like crowning a Lord of Misrule. Though his book described a fictional celebration, many believe it “invented” Christmas traditions.
A Christmas Carol
Around the same time, Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol. Its message of charity and goodwill deeply influenced both America and England, promoting the holiday’s celebration among Victorian society.
Why Is Christmas Celebrated on December 25?
Halloween and Its Roots
While Halloween is now largely secular, centered on candy and costumes, it originated from the Celtic festival Samhain, celebrated about 1,200 years ago.
The ancient Celts, tribes scattered across western and central Europe, had distinct languages and cultures. Even after Roman conquest, Celtic traditions survived in places like Brittany, Cornwall, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Wales.
Halloween Inspired by Samhain
Samhain was a druidic festival held on October 31. It marked the Celtic New Year, starting at sundown after the autumn harvest and marking the start of winter’s dark half.
Samhain was a time when the spiritual world became visible, and gods played tricks on mortals. Spirits of the dead were believed to mingle with the living. The Celts gathered their harvests by Samhain to protect them from mischievous spirits who returned on the first night of winter.
Offerings of harvested food were made to appease these spirits.
Additional Note
Regarding interpretation of scripture, some have twisted or altered the words of God in the Bible, especially in the epistles of Galatians, Colossians, and Romans. Understanding these correctly requires the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
