The Fall of the Roman Empire
By the destruction from all angles by many stronger nations of the world, wave after wave of Germanic barbarian tribes swept through the Roman Empire. Groups such as the Visigoths, Vandals, Angles, Saxons, Franks, Ostrogoths, and Lombards took turns ravaging the Empire, eventually carving out areas in which to settle. The Angles and Saxons populated the British Isles, and the Franks ended up in France. In 476 C.E., Romulus, the last of the Roman emperors in the west, was overthrown by the Germanic leader Odoacer, who became the first barbarian to rule in Rome. The order that the Roman Empire had brought to western Europe for 1000 years was no more. Please read more on the internet for yourself.
Biblical Prophecy and Rome
Firstly, the verse begins with Revelation 13:1:
“And I stood upon the sand of the sea: and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads, the name of blasphemy.”
The beast rises out of the sea. In biblical prophecy, the sea symbolizes many people, as shown in Revelation 17:15:
“And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.”
So, the sea in verse one means many peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. At the time of this revelation, the country of Italy had many nations, peoples, multitudes, and tongues. Rome grew as the city of Italy.
The seven heads refer to the seven hills of Rome. The ten horns represent powers, which are the ten empires of Rome. The “names of blasphemy” refer to the sins of Rome against God and our Lord Jesus Christ, which are more blasphemous than anything else in history.
From this understanding, knowledge, and wisdom that the Lord has provided, Revelation 13:1-15 makes it clear that Rome is the beast, or what the world calls the second beast, but not as the world understands it.
Verse two says:
“With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” (Revelation 17:2)
During the evil reigns of the ten empires of Rome, wickedness in warring with the entire world, conquering and enslaving people from all walks of life, Rome made illicit trades with all the leaders of conquered countries and made merchandise of them.
Verse two also says (Revelation 13:2):
“And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.”
This beast’s mouth was like a lion (symbol of Babylon), the body like a leopard (symbol of Greece), and feet like a bear (symbol of Medo-Persia). Rome took the symbols of these three kingdoms. So, from chapter 13:1-15 of Revelation, Rome is without any doubt the beast.
Rome in History and Prophecy
The world’s knowledge about Rome is completely different from that of the Lord Jesus Christ because the Lord created Rome and is the beginning and the end of Rome, who knows everything about it. Rome has been the enemy of the Lord from its nativity.
Rome changed the days of God to name them after her gods and goddesses, renamed the months after emperors, and made the years leap years. She ruled God’s people during the Roman Empires with rigor, taxing them heavily, forcing people to extract money they could not afford. Remember Matthew, one of the tax collectors, whom Jesus converted to become His apostle.
Rome desecrated the temple of God with abominations. The evil leaders of Rome made themselves lords over God’s inheritance, the Israelites. Rome’s history is never conclusive, and it will never be, because many writers and historians write about Rome without the full knowledge of its true history, nativity, and origin as known by the Almighty God.
The Image in Daniel’s Prophecy
Now, about the image above, as the Almighty Lord revealed to me:
From the knees to the legs, according to Daniel’s interpretation, this represents Rome—the two legs symbolize the two empires of Rome, the Eastern and Western Empires. These empires were situated in Constantinople and Rome and developed rapidly through wars, becoming ten empires ruling almost the whole world.
Daniel 2:40-45 explains:
“The fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron… As the toes of the feet were part of iron and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken… And in the days of these kings, the God of heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed.”
The two legs are the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. Rome, through wars, grew into ten empires:
-
Alemani — now Germany
-
Franks — now France
-
Burgundians — now Switzerland
-
Suevi — now Portugal
-
Anglo-Saxons — now England
-
Visigoths — now Spain
-
Lombards — now Italy
-
Heruli
-
Vandals
-
Ostrogoths (the last three were destroyed by the Pope)
Symbols in Daniel’s Vision
-
The sea symbolizes a multitude of people.
-
Revelation 18:12-13 describes the ten horns as ten kings, representing the ten empires of Rome.
-
The old names correspond to the modern nations listed above.
-
These empires now collectively form what is known as the revived Roman Empires or the European Union, fulfilling Daniel’s prophecy that “these have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.”
Four Beasts in Daniel 7:17 & 23
Daniel spoke of four great beasts, representing four kings or kingdoms. The fourth beast is Rome:
“The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.”
Rome grew from a small city to a mighty empire of ten empires, ruling almost the entire world.
Characteristics of Rome
Rome was built on seven hills, which is a counterfeit of Jerusalem:
-
Aventine
-
Caelian
-
Capitoline
-
Esquiline
-
Palatine
-
Quirinal
-
Viminal
The Italian painter Giotto di Bondone described Rome as “the city of echoes, the city of illusions, and the city of yearning.”
The seven heads of the beast represent seven kings who ruled Rome. The ten horns are the ten empires, now known as the European Union or revived Roman Empires.
The antichrist, the beast of Revelation 13:1-5, is identified as the first Bishop of Rome, Linus, a disciple of Christ during Paul’s ministry (2 Timothy 4:21).
The Pope and the Beast
Revelation 17:8 describes the beast that was, is not, and yet is:
“The beast that thou sawest was, and is not, and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit…”
This prophecy fits with the history of the Papacy. Pope Pius VI was taken prisoner by Napoleon’s generals and taken to France. After his death, Barnaba Chiaramonti was elected Pope Pius VII, crowned with a papier-mâché tiara due to the French seizure of the original.
Thus:
-
The beast that was = Pope Pius VI (who died in prison)
-
The beast that is not = the papal power temporarily broken
-
The beast that is = Pope Pius VII, who resumed rule
This fits the prophecy of the beast that was and is not.
The Papacy and the Antichrist
The beast that was, and is, and is not, under the name Pope, was captured and exiled but later restored, completing the prophecy in Daniel.
The Pope’s power and influence are tied to the evil Papacy, which originated from Rome’s evil design.
Revelation 17: The Seven Hills and Seven Kings
The seven hills of Rome are the foundation of the prophecy, and the seven kings are the rulers of Rome:
-
Five have fallen
-
One is
-
One is yet to come
The eighth king is of the seven and goes into perdition—this refers to the evil Papacy.
The Ten Horns and the European Union
The ten horns are the ten old empires of Rome, now known by new names. The last three empires were destroyed by the Pope but remnants remain.
These empires share one mind and give their power to the beast—this is the revived Roman Empire, now the European Union.
The Final Battle and Judgment
Revelation 17:14 says:
“These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them…”
And Revelation 20 describes Satan’s binding, the thousand-year reign of Christ, the final rebellion of Gog and Magog, and the final judgment.
Unfolding the Mystery of Revelation 17
Many writers and historians have tried to explain Revelation 17:9-17. The mountains are the seven hills of Rome.
The ten horns represent the ten kings who receive power with the beast for a short time, uniting in opposition to Christ.
Ancient Civilizations Leading to Rome
-
Sumer (Ancient Mesopotamia) — c. 4500 to c. 1900 BCE
-
Akkadian Empire — c. 2334 to c. 2154 BCE, centered around modern-day Iraq
These early civilizations set the stage for later empires, including Rome.
