“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”
—Luke 1:46–47
Mary grew up learning about the promise of this Messiah. When she was a young girl engaged to Joseph, she received a vision from an angel. He asked her to become the mother of the Savior she had waited for. Mary responded,
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”
—Luke 1:38
Mary knew that Jesus would be her Savior, too. In gratitude, she offered a prayer we now call the Magnificat.
Being Jesus’ mother wasn’t easy. Mary and Joseph were poor and worked hard to provide for their family. Mary raised Jesus in their religious traditions, presenting him in the temple as a baby and taking him to Jerusalem for festivals. Knowing who he truly was must have felt like a tremendous responsibility.
During one trip to Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph lost Jesus. He was only 12 years old. They searched for three days before finding him in the temple, teaching the elders.
As an adult, Jesus began preaching—and Mary stayed close. At the wedding in Cana, she asked him to perform a miracle by turning water into wine. She trusted him completely and told the others,
“Do whatever he tells you.”
Mary stood by Jesus even in his suffering. She was there when he carried the cross and watched others commit terrible acts against him. Even then, she didn’t leave him. She stood at the foot of the cross, listening and offering comfort. It was there that Jesus entrusted all of us to her care.
That mission remained close to Mary’s heart. After Jesus’ Ascension, she stayed with the Apostles, comforting and praying with them. She was present at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came and watched as they went out to spread the Good News of God’s love.
