Scripture Readings on the Suffering of Christ
The Betrayal and Rejection
Psalm 55:12–14
For it is not an enemy who reproaches me, then I could bear it;
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me,
Then I could hide myself from him.
But it is you, a man my equal,
My companion and my familiar friend;
We who had sweet fellowship together
Walked in the house of God in the throng.
Psalm 57:4
My soul is among lions;
I must lie among those who breathe forth fire,
Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows
And their tongue a sharp sword.
The Prophecies of Suffering
Isaiah 53:1–12
He was despised and forsaken of men,
A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief…
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed…
He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not open His mouth…
Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;
He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel.
Psalm 2:2
The kings of the earth take their stand
And the rulers take counsel together
Against the LORD and against His Anointed…
Psalm 22:1
My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning.
Psalm 69:21
They also gave me gall for my food,
And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Jesus Foretells His Suffering
Matthew 16:21
From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem,
and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes,
and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.
Luke 9:22
“The Son of Man must suffer many things
and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes,
and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”
Mark 9:12
“Elijah does first come and restore all things.
And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?”
Matthew 20:18–19
“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem;
and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes,
and they will condemn Him to death,
and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him,
and on the third day He will be raised up.”
Mark 10:33–34, Luke 18:31–32, Mark 9:31, Luke 17:25, Luke 20:13–15, Luke 22:15, John 12:27 – all echo the same truth: Jesus knew the suffering He would endure and willingly embraced it for our sake.
The Temptation of Jesus
Matthew 4:1–3, Luke 4:1–3, Matthew 4:5, Luke 4:9, Matthew 4:8, Luke 4:5, Mark 1:13 – These passages remind us of Christ’s spiritual battles before His public ministry, where He withstood Satan’s temptations with divine strength and authority.
The Reality of Rejection
Luke 22:3, John 13:27, John 14:30, Revelation 12:4, John 7:7, Matthew 2:13, John 1:10, John 3:20, John 15:18–20, 1 Corinthians 2:8, John 1:11, Isaiah 53:1, Matthew 23:37, Luke 19:41–42, Luke 24:20 – These scriptures show how the world rejected Christ and continues to reject the truth, even though He came in love and truth.
Reflection
When we talk about the pains of life, many of us face hardship because of our own actions—bad choices, poor health habits, or the consequences of a broken world. But Jesus Christ went through deep suffering, not because of any fault of His own, but because of ours. He was sinless, pure, and is the Almighty God. His pain was for our redemption.
Reading these passages, it becomes clear—by the Holy Spirit’s witness—that we can truly say, with full sincerity:
A Personal Declaration of Faith
I, Juliana JooSabba, declare, decree, and confirm the following:
I was born a sinner.
I have committed many sins in my life.
I am deeply sorry for all of them.
I now plead with Jesus Christ to wash away all my sins through the precious blood He shed on Calvary.
I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior with all my heart, mind, thoughts, strength, and everything within me.
I ask Jesus to fill me with His Holy Spirit.
Teach me, Lord.
Direct all my paths.
Separate me completely from worldliness.
Deliver me from all evil and from every work of Satan.
From now on, Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior—forever.
In Christ’s name, Amen.
